The numbers of students abandoning their faith in college is staggering. Today’s guest, Laurel Bunker, VP of Christian Formation and Church Relations at Bethel University in Minneapolis, Minnesota says moms are still a central influence in the lives of their children even after they leave home for college. Laurel explains the best steps parents can take as they help their student select schools and prepare them to launch, including a few difficult training conversations that must take place.

Laurel Bunker is the Associate VP of Christian Formation and Church Relations at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota. As campus pastor, Laurel serves as the primary preacher in chapel and leads a team that is dedicated to providing transformational ministry opportunities for the Bethel community. She is a member of the President’s Executive Leadership Team, providing strategic guidance on issues related to the spiritual formation and personal development of the student body. She also teaches and trains at colleges, churches, and para-church organizations in the areas of leadership, spiritual development, biblical issues in the 21st-century, and more. Laurel and her husband, Joshua, have two daughters.

Kate Rietema grew up with a Moms in Prayer mom and made the choice early in her parenting journey to continue the tradition. She and her husband, Tony, live in West Michigan with their family of 5 girls. Kate and Tony are foster parents and are in the final stages of adopting their youngest daughter. “For Girls Like You is going to go on.” Jonathan Pitts has prayerfully stepped into the ministry that his wife founded, ministering and discipling girls in a fun-filled Christ centered way. Today Lee and Jonathan talk about God’s providence in leading his family in a story that only He could write. From the beginning of the ministry through his wife, Wynter, the beginning of a magazine for tweens, books, the acting career of the daughter, to the calling of his wife home to heaven six months ago, Jonathan sees the leading and faithfulness of the Lord. “It was just a normal day.” Moms in Prayer Area Coordinator, Sarah Maranville lost her 13 year old son, Wesley, unexpectedly to an undiagnosed heart defect. “Let’s face it, this is every mama’s worst nightmare. But with the Lord’s help, we had unimaginable peace.” Today, Sarah shares her story of loss, prayer, provision and unmovable hope in the Lord.

Sarah Maranville and her family farm on the plains of Eastern Colorado. She has been happily married to Scott for over 20 years and the Lord has blessed them with three beautiful children Riley (17), Wesley (went to be with the Lord at 13 in December 2015) and Charley (13). Sarah is an area coordinator for Moms In Prayer and has a huge passion for prayer. Sarah and her sister in law own Clear Skies Millingwhere they use home grown wheat to make flour and other signature mixes.

Shannon Dunn-Downing is a wife, Moms in Prayer mom and snowboarding Olympian. Shannon sees a great commonality in the disciple involved in athletic greatness and spiritual maturity. In today’s episode, Shannon sits down with Lee to talk about her Olympic journey and the even greater mission of being a mother.

Shannon Dunn-Downing is a wife, praying mom and snowboarding Olympian. At the Winter X-Games competition, she won the women's halfpipe, making her a two-time X-Games Gold medalist in both in 1997 and 2001. Using a board she designed, Shannon also went to the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano bringing home a bronze medal in the halfpipe competition to become the first American woman to earn an Olympic medal in the sport. Today Shannon is married to fellow snowboarder Dave Downing. They have two sons, Logan age 15 and Dillon age 13. When not focused on being a full-time mother, Shannon enjoys surfing during the summer months at their home in Encinitas, California. She has been a Moms in Prayer group member for 9 years.
